POPULARITY
Mathematics and computer science is the 220th most popular degree in America, with 911 students receiving their bachelors degree last year. It just beat out #221 Molecular Biology, and narrowly lost to #219 Accounting and Finance.
The degree is offered at a total of 71 colleges across the nation, and is the 222nd most widely offered degree. It is only offered at 15% of the Top 100 Best Colleges in America.
It is also worth noting that 44% of colleges offering mathematics and computer science are public making it a pretty accessible field.
The far west produces the most mathematics and computer science graduates, largely led by University of California-San Diego, while it’s the California Collegiate Athletic Association that leads conference totals. As far as states, California ranks highest, with particular help from University of California-San Diego and Harvey Mudd College.
All that being said, no individual school produces more mathematics and computer science graduates than California Institute of Technology, which graduated 387 students last year alone. Although size is critical, another important factor to consider is the program’s density (the percent of all students that study mathematics and computer science). More students studied mathematics and computer science as a percentage of total students at Harvey Mudd College than any other college.
