If you think life as a german author, german foreign intelligence operator, or german translator sounds interesting, then a degree in german language and literature may just be for you. You could even become an ambassador to Germany!
German language and literature is the 210th most popular degree in America, with 1,001 students receiving their bachelors degree last year. It just beat out #211 Computer Engineering Technologies, and narrowly lost to #209 African-American Studies.
The degree is offered at a total of 353 colleges across the nation, and is the 63rd most widely offered degree. Given that german language and literature is offered at 69% of the Top 100 Best Colleges in America, you can be sure this is a critical degree and the skillsets acquired are likely to last for a long time.
It is also worth noting that 42% of colleges offering german language and literature are public making it a pretty accessible field.
The great lakes produces the most german language and literature graduates, largely led by University of Notre Dame, while it’s the Big Ten Conference that leads conference totals. As far as states, Michigan ranks highest, with particular help from Hillsdale College and University of Michigan-Ann Arbor.
All that being said, no individual school produces more german language and literature graduates than The University of Alabama, which graduated 42 students last year alone. Although size is critical, another important factor to consider is the program’s density (the percent of all students that study german language and literature). More students studied german language and literature as a percentage of total students at Wabash College than any other college.
